Road to Access for Healthcare

History

The Story of the Care Van

The Rainier Foothills Wellness Foundation Care Van was originally established in 1987 and provided rides to anyone needing transportation to the local hospital, pharmacies, local medical offices including physicians, dentists, optometrists, chiropractors, and therapists. The Care Van was originally purchased by Rainier Foothills Wellness Foundation, operationally supported by the hospital and financially supported by the Foundation and generous donors.

  • In 2007, Enumclaw Regional Hospital became affiliated with Franciscan Health System (FHS).  As changes naturally occurred during the hospital ownership transition, Franciscan assumed ownership of the senior transportation program.
  • In August 2010, the operation of the Care Van was taken out of service due to limited resources.
  • In August 2011, Rainier Foothills Wellness Foundation approached Franciscan Health System and requested ownership of the Care Van as a way for the Foundation to serve an on-going need in our communities.
  • In November 2011, the Foundation received the transportation van, along with a $15,000 FHS grant to initiate the transportation program in our community.

The van is not equipped with car seats. If a car seat is required for a young passenger, the parent must supply the car seat.

The Care Van program provides free, non-emergency transportation to and from healthcare related appointments within the Rainier Foothills Wellness Foundation (RFWF) service area. Service areas includes: Enumclaw, Buckley, Wilkeson, Carbonado, Greenwater and Black Diamond. The Care Van is equipped with a hydraulic lift which enables transport for disabled, passengers with wheelchairs, electric scooters and senior citizens that cannot enter the van by use of the stairs. The Care Van provides rides to other plateau residents who are not seniors or disabled, but who may show a temporary hardship for transportation to health-related appointments.
